About this project
We have supplied fitted education furniture in a project to the value of £100,000+ to Milestone Academy in New Ash Green, Kent, which caters for children with profound, severe and complex learning difficulties. The project was part of a major, multi-million pound refurbishment and extension of the school by Kent County Council.
The three-stage furniture installation was managed by main contractors R J Barwick Construction Services, which specified a variety of fitted furniture from our education furniture range. Architects were SDA.
“In these environments, we understand that strong, durable and robust furniture is of the utmost priority to head teachers in order to ensure the safety of their pupils, which is why our furniture is a popular choice.” Trevor Gillman, Managing Director, David Bailey Furniture.

Education furniture for Milestone Academy
All the classrooms were fitted with white fixed wall-hung and floor-mounted units and red, green and blue worktops and handles were chosen to define the different Key Stage departments. Sloping shelving with timber lipping was introduced as an additional built-in safety feature.
Other areas of the severe learning difficulties academy to benefit from the furniture installation were the IT rooms, science department, speech and language rooms, art and clay rooms, food technology kitchens and the staff rooms.
To complete this severe learning difficulties furniture installation, David Bailey and R J Barwick worked with SDA Architects.
Milestone Academy Furniture
Milestone Academy is for children with profound, severe and complex learning difficulties. The academy has 223 full time pupils ranging in age from two to 19 years.
In the last three years, Kent County Council has spent seven million pounds on refurbishing and extending the academy to bring facilities into the 21st century. The academy now accommodates a Key Stage 1 and 2 department and a Key Stage 3 and 4 department that reflect the ages and needs of the pupils. The site also includes a separate Further Education unit.
Additional facilities include a large hydrotherapy pool, drama studio, full size gymnasium, specialist classrooms for art, science and food technology, and a new training centre.
Milestone Academy is part of Kent County Council – Children, Families and Education.

Education furniture installations
Our specialist education furniture is installed in many schools, colleges and further education facilities. We have recently been selected by main contractor E W Beard to manufacture furniture for Headington Girls School in Oxford, in a £65,000 contract. This will be for 45 units and 100 metres of worktop in 11 classrooms. The work will start in November 2020. Other education customers include:
- Yateley Community School, Hampshire
- Channing School, London
- University of Wales
- Clore Shalom School, Hertfordshire
Architects and Contractors rely on us because they know we are well established and professional and our durable furniture is manufactured in Britain with craftsmanship and professionalism. We also install our own furniture into a facility, so there is no need to ensure a contractor has installation instructions.
School rebuilding programme
Update July 2020: We welcome the recent pledge by the prime minister, Boris Johnson, to provide a £1bn schools rebuilding programme over a 10-year investment plan for upgrades and refurbishments. This is the first major schools rebuilding programme since 2014 and will make sure our schools and colleges are fit for the future. It is part of the prime minister’s plan to provide a world-class education for children and to help the economy bounce back from this year’s coronavirus crisis.
