From humble beginnings, Hailsham East Community Centre in East Sussex now stands proud as a flagship facility, boasting 42 rooms and totalling around 1,440m, offering much needed resources for residents within the local community. The contract for the supply of the fitted furniture, specified virtually throughout the building, was awarded to specialist David Bailey Furniture Systems by architect Nexus Frankham Ltd.
Established five years ago, the centre was initially based in a three-bedroom house within a residential housing estate. After two years, it became a registered charity and subsequently obtained funding for the £1.5 million building project, enabling work to start last year and be completed this summer.
The finished centre is very much a collaborative effort, taking into account community members’ suggestions. For instance, the youth club features a specially commissioned stained glass window designed by a local artist, with input from the children who use the centre.
The building also incorporates five kitchens, permitting one for each of the key areas; the lounge, the youth club, the resident’s hall cafe an additional galley kitchen in the nursery and the main kitchen facility. Wall-hung and floor-standing base units from the David Bailey Healthline range have been incorporated into each of these areas. Neutral shades were selected for the units to ensure the furniture complemented the vibrant colour scheme that radiates from a bright canary yellow to warm orange for the kitchen adjacent to the lounge area, and funky purple and stainless steel in the youth club area. The range was also incorporated into the craft workshop to offer storage for equipment.
